Altrad is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join a significant long-term opportunity within the UK defence sector. The programme is entering mobilisation, with the engineering model, partner interfaces and initial project pipeline being established ahead of project delivery.
The successful candidate will join during mobilisation and take ownership of engineering across a portfolio of complex projects, leading multidisciplinary engineering from requirements and design through implementation, commissioning and handover. This is a senior functional role requiring strong technical judgement, design governance and integration with delivery.
You will be the senior engineering lead within a multidisciplinary programme team, accountable for engineering management, technical integrity and assurance of design outputs across the portfolio. You will lead internal engineers and design partners, ensure design maturity supports lifecycle decisions, and maintain engineering continuity into construction and commissioning.
Key Deliverables:
- Lead engineering across the project portfolio from requirements and definition through design, implementation support, commissioning and handover.
- Own the engineering management approach, design governance, technical assurance, design reviews and configuration / interface control.
- Build and lead a suitably qualified multidisciplinary engineering team and integrate strategic design partners, specialists and OEMs.
- Ensure technical requirements, safety functions, codes, standards, operability and maintainability are translated into controlled design outputs.
- Embed constructability, manufacturability, procurement, commissioning and operational input early enough to influence design and avoid late rework.
- Provide oversight and assurance in engineering alignment with Quality, CDM, Design Safety and Safety Case programme and project specific requirements.
- Lead resolution of technical risks, queries, concessions and changes, maintaining design integrity through manufacture and site implementation.
- Provide clear engineering assurance to programme leadership and manage interfaces with client technical authorities, safety specialists and delivery partners.
Key Requirements / Qualifications:
- You will be an experienced engineering leader with the technical credibility and judgement to lead multidisciplinary design and assurance within a highly regulated environment.
- Significant engineering or design leadership experience within defence, nuclear, infrastructure, energy or another highly regulated sector.
- Typically 15+ years relevant post-professional qualification experience, including accountability for complex multidisciplinary engineering.
- Chartered Engineer status, supported by a relevant engineering or scientific degree or equivalent professional qualification.
- Proven experience managing engineering from requirements and design development through construction support, commissioning and handover.
- Strong experience of technical assurance, design reviews, requirements, configuration, interfaces and engineering governance.
- Experience leading internal and partner engineering teams and working effectively with client technical authorities and assurance functions.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of UK Government security clearance. Regular attendance at secure client locations within the Reading area will be required.
Candidates will be required to obtain DV level security clearance.
